'Poppins' off to a flying start in London

"Even allowing for the usual first-night excesses, the show was enthusiastically received. Some stunts, such as Bert the chimney sweep literally walking along each surface of the proscenium arch - including tap-dancing upside down from the top - drew cheers. The reviews were mostly ecstatic, with the Times of London declaring the show "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious."

So was the opening-night party. Mackintosh rented an eight-story building on Leicester Square and transformed it into the Banks' residence on Cherry Tree Lane, each floor with a different theme. Guests climbed stairs decorated with cherry trees to such floors as Mary's Sweets, Mrs. Brill's Kitchen and Jane and Michael's Attic.

"It's incredible," said "Dawson's Creek" star Joshua Jackson, in town to rehearse his own West End debut. The show, he said, is "well worth crossing the pond for."

Chillin' in NYC: Julia Stiles and Joshua Jackson with a female friend in the audience at Friday night's (12/3) BAFTA screening of Ocean's Twelve at the French Institute. "Her hair was short, just shoulder length, and wavy, and she wore a black overcoat and pink scarf. Very cute in person. Joshua looked exactly like he does on TV. Chatted with Julia for a few minutes on the long bathroom line, she was very nice and friendly, and talked about how much she liked Matt Damon in the movie."
