Traffic Jam in "Prius Only" Lane
LOS ANGELES, Calif., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Celebrity attendees and presenters
at the 14th annual Environmental Media Awards (EMA) on November 17, 2004, were
counting on actions speaking louder than words when they arrived at the ceremony
in hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles. But no one expected a traffic jam in
the "Prius Only" lane.
Over 60 celebrities and Hollywood glitterati demonstrated their commitment to
the environment by arriving in the super ultra low-emission hybrids. To
underscore the Environmental Media Association's dedication to recognizing
environmentally conscious programming, a special "Prius Only" lane had been
designated but actual use went well beyond expectations.
Some of the presenters and guests who benefited from Prius Privileges included:
Woody Harrelson, Jeffrey Tambor of the Emmy winning series "Arrested
Development," Jason Schwartzman of "I Heart Huckabees," comedienne Sarah
Silverman, actresses Wendie Malik, Sara Rue ("Less Than Perfect"), Poppy
Montgomery ("Without A Trace"), Frances Fisher ("House of Sand and Fog"), Dana
Delany, Julie Warner ("Baseball Wives"), actors Peter Horton ("While I Was
Gone"), Dean Cain, and Joshua Jackson ("Dawson's Creek"). Special
honorees Daryl Hannah and Willie Nelson also drive alternative fuel vehicles.
"I believe that cars like the Toyota Prius are moving in the right direction and
taking the appropriate steps to help create a more sustainable environment for
future generations," states television star Dean Cain.
By showing their support for fuel efficient cars to decrease our dependence on
fossil fuels, reduce air pollution, and stem climate change, these attendees
joined the growing list of celebrities who already demonstrate their concern for
the environment by owning and driving a Toyota Prius including Cameron Diaz,
Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst, Will Ferrell, Tim Robbins, and many
more.
For the third consecutive year, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. was the Presenting
Sponsor of the Environmental Media Awards. The awards recognize the creative
teams behind television, film and music productions that raise public awareness
of environmental issues by incorporating positive environmental messages in
their work.
Toyota, the recognized leader in hybrid technology, is attracting a mainstream
audience for its environmentally advanced vehicles. Sales of Toyota's
gas-electric hybrid Prius recently passed 200,000 units worldwide, making Prius
the world's best-selling hybrid. Sales in the U.S. are expected to be nearly
50,000 for 2004 and double that for 2005.

Fernando Eimbcke's Duck Season (Temporada de Patos) won the Grand Jury Prize of the International Feature Competition at AFI Fest 2004, which concluded Sunday. Jury awards were handed out Friday. The audience award in the feature category, announced Sunday, went to Hotel Rwanda, directed by Terry George and starring Don Cheadle, which will be released domestically by United Artists. Wash Westmoreland's Gay Republicans took the audience award in the documentary category, while the audience award for best short went to Neele Leana Vollmar's My Parents. The International Feature Jury, which consisted of Joshua Jackson, Emily Mortimer and Peter Scarlet, hailed the Mexican feature Duck Season, the story of two 14-year-olds spending a Sunday afternoon together, as "an extraordinarily well-crafted, well-acted debut film. Its impressive formal control is matched by its refreshing and original sense of humor."

Livin' it up in Santa Monica:
Miramax may be ailing, but they held their position as best party-thrower at the film industry tradeshow American Film Market, wrapping up tomorrow in Santa Monica. There were lots of unsuccessful crashers at this event last Friday, held at the restaurant Akwa. The celebs attending spanned Hollywood young and old. Quentin Tarantino and producing pal Lawrence Bender spent most of the evening in conversations with buyers and fans at the indoor bar. Outside on the patio, Joshua Jackson entertained a gaggle of ladies gathering around him. David Carradine, looking better in person than in Kill Bill volumes 1&2, wandered around chatting to people, as did Anthony Minghella. And Schuyler Fisk, daughter of Sissy Spacek, was constantly surrounded by adoring men (which didn't seem to make it easy for her burly bearded bodyguard straight out of a Shaw brothers movie). But the highlight of the evening was the entrance of the Weinstein brothers and Kate Beckinsale. Radiant in a gold dress, she stopped quite a few conversations. She was gracious to the throng around her angling for face time. However, Harvey made it less than pleasant for the peasants that tried to engage him in chit-chat. Was his attendance predicated on chatting up potential suitors in anticipation of his impending divorce from the Mouse House? He and Bob hid away in the back VIP room for the rest of the party.
