Joshua Jackson Fan Reviews

"A Life in the Theatre" - Jaycee - Second Fan Review
February 4, 2005 - Third Press Night

So, I saw A Life In The Theatre again tonight. It was just as good, if not better, in fact. The last time I saw this was on the first preview night and there were a few changes. Just small ones, like the nuances in certain lines said, with or without the shortening or lengthening of pauses, that added to the humour of a scene, a couple of props that weren't there the first night and Josh stripped off more than before. On the first night, you never saw him in just his briefs, but tonight trousers and shirt came off. He has a beautifully lean, and nicely toned body and I'm always surprised by how slim he actually is. (There were no sniggers, whistles or giggles when Josh stripped, apart from a few soft indrawn gasps to my right and behind me!) The grabbing of Josh's left breast had been omitted, too, from the first night. Maybe they thought that pointer to 'Robert's' homoerotic interest in John was too brazen, too much, overkill.

I did find, however, that while there were plenty of laughs from the audience it wasn't as prolific as the first night, except for the hospital scene, which was even funnier this time around. The scene where Josh's character, John, misses his cue to go on 'stage' was a lot more amusing to me than last time as well. I think it was Josh's character's high-pitched squeaks of disbelief and panic as he scrabbled back and forth that did it. He was a lot more animated with it this time. Josh really is good at comedy, I think. But there wasn't even a titter when Josh mentioned 'Dawson,' Okalahoma, which had brought about a big laugh on the first night. Maybe there were less DC fans tonight than before.

I remember the end now! I must admit I was left wondering what comes next after Robert's 'accident.' But it ends on a happy note. There was a lot of appreciative applause at the end, but no standing ovation like on the first night. Josh and Patrick came back on stage three times to take bows. I liked the way they held each other's hands with outstretched arms as they bowed and would look at each other and smile, or more so, Josh looking over at Patrick and grinning.

We didn't have to wait long for Josh to come out afterwards. He was first this time and he was a lot less hurried than last night. Yes, I popped along there last night. Forgot to mention that. And he always wears his cap when he comes out and my friend that I went with said she wasn't surprised considering the state of his hair at the moment! No major incidences except for one fan who ran after him, in such a comical way, arms flailing, as he was hustled into a black taxi cab! No members of his family were there tonight. He left alone.
